Unmasking Grief -
Managing the impact of loss, grief and trauma
Presenter: Dr Geoffrey Glassock
Date: Saturday 22 October 2011
Workshop outline:
The workshop will elaborate on the normality of grief showing how it is associated with life not just simply death. In the post-modern environment there are new directions in grief and bereavement which are informing clinical practice. The psychoanalytic view that grief means the severing of bonds to the deceased is being challenged and the notion of ‘continuing bonds’ is finding ready acceptance as are other grief models. These models include the dual process model, ‘disenfranchised grief’, ambiguous loss and meaning making.
Meaning making is of the essence of existential counselling. People need to find ways of making sense of life before they can make sense of their problems and of themselves. Robert Grant talks of trauma and transformation. He says that ‘unless people are helped to integrate the significance of their traumatic wounds into more comprehensive approaches to self, life and God victims run the of being condemned to a life time of psychological symptoms, addictions and wasted potential’ The goal of the therapist is to facilitate this transformation.
